Featured Artist | My Artistic Journey

Hello, mamas out there!

Can you believe July is closing in on us already?  I sure can't.   We hope you've enjoyed the {shadows} theme so far this month, with our fabulously talented guest judge, Kristey of My Artistic Journey.

Here are some fun facts about our guest judge:

1. Tell us three things about you, unrelated to photography.

Three things about myself unrelated to photography. . . I am a stay at home mom to three amazing little people but I would have 12 if I physically could. . . I am a very down to Earth small town girl from Idaho (currently living in AZ but hoping to move back soon). . . I am very much an open book and would give just about anyone the shirt off my back.

  • 2.) If you were going to venture into a genre you currently don't photograph, what would it be and why?
If I where to venture into another genre with my photography it would definitely be street/documentary photography. I admire people who are able to capture the true essence of strangers in their own environment through their photography and to tell a story through their work both emotionally and creatively. My dear friend Marts Musa-Birchmore (https://www.facebook.com/MartaMusaPhotography) is truly so amazing at this and every time I see one of her images I wish I had the courage to take to the streets and put myself out there and actually SEE people the way she does. Her work, her heart and her approach truly inspire me.

  • 3. When did your photography journey begin?
My journey began when I was quite young. My parents got me my first 35mm film camera when I was about 8 and it has been a love affair ever since. I have always LOVED the sound of a shutter release snapping shut, it is one of my favorite sounds in the world. My parents were also very big on finding something you love and doing it. . . because if you love what you do than you will never truly work a day in your life. . . Although as an adult I realize that anything worth doing right takes an incredible amount of work and dedication, I always knew growing up that if I wanted something bad enough and worked hard enough I could accomplish it. I purchased my first DSLR in 2005 and have been going strong ever since.

4. Give us a photography related goal you hope to accomplish?
I have SO many goals and projects going on right now and I would REALLY like to get through the year saying that I have accomplished and kept up with each one. I am currently right in the middle of my second consecutive 365 project (and I have an amazing support group that I have to give a shout out to because without them I probably would have given up about a month into last year . . . whoop whoop to my One2 Crew), I am also currently doing a 99 Days of Summer Project, a 10 on 10 Blog Circle and I admin at Reflections Photo Forum where we have several ongoing projects in the works. I guess my goal would be to just keep trucking along, doing what I love and being true to myself while trying to put my best foot forward on all of these things.

  • 5. What is your favorite piece of gear you own, or what are you lusting after?

I am so crazy addicted to vintage manual lenses and if I had to choose one lens to pack around for the rest of my photography career it would be my Helios 40-2 85mm 1.8. That lens is a beast and has so much personality. Not only does it rock nature work but it is an amazing portrait lens and the creativity it brings into a shot is unmatchable. One lens I have and probably will continue lusting over for the rest of my life is a mint condition early 1960’s  Canon 50mm f/0.95 “dream lens”.

Well, do you see now why we were totally smitten with her from HELLO!?!?   Please make it a point to stop by Kristey's page and show her some love this week- and tell her Snappy Mama sent you!
You still have a few days left to get those {shadows} entries in, too.  Can't wait to see your take on it!
