Spotlight on: {Courtney Rust}

Happy Wednesday to all of our Snappy Mama fans!

"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving.
What you have caught on film is captured forever....
It remembers little things,
Long after you have forgotten everything."
~Aaron Siskind

I saw this quote yesterday and thought it was a great one to kick off your day. We have another phenomenal guest judge this week. Courtney Rust of Rusty Lens Photography brings the creative theme of {negative space}.

We asked her some questions about herself and her photography so our fans could get to know her. Read all about her then make sure to go to her page and check out more of her work.

When did your photography journey begin?

There are so many ways to say “begin”. The first time I had camera lust was in 1990 in Kenya when we went with a friend from the Associated Press and she brought her big girl camera and lenses. Or it could have started when I got my pink Barbie 110mm camera the next year. But I think it really began in 2003 when I took my first photography class. It was my first time in a darkroom. I’d always dreamt about how cool it would be, and it lived up to every expectation. I have been shooting ever since.

Name a photographer who inspires you. What draws you to their work?

Vivian Maier is a favorite for several reasons. I am obsessed with her natural candid body for work. But also her secretive lifestyle she lived and that she never sought after any validation.

Canon? Nikon?

Nikon.  I made this decision years and years ago on my first film camera. I love my Nikon. Always have. I have never once thought the grass was greener anywhere else. I love the way my color comes out of my images and I love the sharpness of my glass. I used Nikon microscopes, I used Nikon scopes on rifles, and I have even had Nikon lenses in my glasses. Bo knows baseball. Nikon knows cameras. That said, the best camera to have is the one you have on you, and there isn't a single thing that I can do with my camera that anyone couldn't do with the most entry level canon.

Give us a photography related goal you hope to accomplish within a year.

A? Singular? Haha. My brain runs at an intense speed I can’t even keep up with it. I just wrote a beginner photography book, I’d love to get more into teaching and mentoring.

What program do you use to edit your images? Tell us why you love it.

I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC. I am a brand new LR convert. Before I was using ACR and Photoshop. I switched because I signed up for a video class that uses Lightroom to edit the video clips that camera raw doesn’t support. After a week I was hooked. I think that the organization capabilities trump Bridge, it’s user friendly, and I love the publish feature that makes it really great to use other applications such as flickr. And the print module? Hello! Love it.

Isn't her work beautiful? So, go on get your {negative space} images submitted. You have until Sunday night to submit your images. Thanks again to Courtney Rust of Rusty Lens Photography for being our guest judge.

xoxo, Jen
