Spotlight on our featured guest judge: {Liz LaBianca}

Hey, Mamas!

SUPER stoked about this week's guest feature.  Thank you again to the amazingly talented Liz LaBianca for guest judging this week.

Not only do I love her work, but this interview in particular really spoke to me and hit home.  Read on and I'm sure you'll agree!

1.) Tell us where your journey began:

My photography journey began long before I was a "snappy mama" - It just took me 37 years to find the confidence to do something about the burning passion that I had for photography....and when I finally called myself a photographer and started my business - I felt like I had found a missing piece to my soul. Once I called myself a photographer - I felt like I was allowed to finally do what I had always wanted to do but felt too silly to do - which was carry my camera around my neck at all times and capture the beauty of life as it unfolded. Here's the caveat - I thought photography really was just about clicking a shutter and capturing moments. Once I dived into starting a photography business - I was smacked in the face with the reality of starting a business.

1.) not everyone loves the "mom with a camera" - I had no idea that there was a negative perception of us out there - I decided to embrace the term .. because I realize what a privilege it is to be a mom with camera

2.) there is something called post-processing - perhaps the hardest part of the journey has been developing my eye to see colors separately. The good thing was that I LOVED editing - not saying it wasn't hard and very time consuming to learn... but I really do enjoy the editing process.

3.) Shooting manual is VERY different then shooting in automatic - but it is true what they say .. once you go manual.. you never go back.

4.) Running a business is not for the faint of heart - As woman we are born people pleasers - and realizing that pleasing everyone is VERY VERY exhausting.

The last 4 years has been such an incredibly ride - and I am so glad that I didn't give up even though at times.. things were really hard - friendships have been tested and lost because people didn't understand how deep this passion ran for me.

2.) Name a photographer who inspires you.  What draws you to their work?

This question gets me every time - Over the last 4 years as I developed my style - I have had "photography crushes" - Whether it was during my black and white phase, lifestyle phase, how about my over editing phase or my prop phase. Each phase came with a crush on someones style that inspired me.

3.) Canon or Nikon?

I am a NIKON girl - primarily because it is just how I started. I had a Nikon d40 as my first DSLR and I just stayed with what I knew.  The only thing I wish I would have known when I started was - I wish I had known the difference between a crop sensor and a full frame. My first business investment was for the nikon d300s and I wish I would have understood how shooting with a crop sensor effected the focal length of my lenses.

4.) Give us a photography related goal you wish to accomplish within the year:

My photography goal has always been kinda cheesy and the same every year - Run a business that is balanced and keeps me happy. This year it encompasses really developing relationships with my clients. I used to be afraid to talk to my clients on the phone - yet,I now finally feel confident in how I run my business and I can talk to my client about the process of how I shoot.

5.) What program do you use to edit your images?  Why do you love it?

My Post processing includes Lightroom and Photoshop. My PP is really quick now because of how much time I have dedicated  a ton of time to nailing my images straight out of camera and finding my editing style.

Do you see why I'm LOVING these answers?  Liz definitely sounds like the kind of person I'd love to sit down over a cup (or 5) of coffee and heart-to-heart with photography.    Be sure to use the above link to check out Liz's Facebook page and also to visit her incredible website.  Thank you again, Liz!

Stay tuned for our winners tomorrow- have a great night, everyone!
